According to research, it is more important to have grit than it is to have intelligence or talent in order to be successful. Grit is an attribute successful people have and, fortunately, anyone can develop more of it.
When I first came across Angela Duckworth’s TEDTalk on grit, the lightbulb went off in my head. Duckworth is a psychology professor who has spent her career studying grit and came to this life changing conclusion. She offers that practice, purpose, hope, and time are the elements that contribute to having more grit.
This struck a chord with me because over the years I’ve thought a lot about my story –of how I achieved personal success and contentment in the face of adversity. If I were to remove myself from the narrative, the story alone is quite remarkable. I’ve also wondered, all things being equal, why do some of us ‘make it’ while others continue to struggle throughout their entire lives? Angela Duckworth provided me with the answer… Grit had been the key to my success!
Since grit is something you’re not born with but, instead, it is an attribute that you can build, it occurred to me that my story of beating the odds could help inspire women and girls to build grit so that they too can be successful. This is the reason I embarked on this journey with the #GrittyGirl blog.
My goals for the #GrittyGirl blog are:
- To honestly and truthfully share stories of my traumatic past and the battles I’ve fought to supersede my circumstances which finally led me to find peace of mind, contentment, and success.
- To collaborate with other remarkable #GrittyGirls who want to share their own stories of struggle and personal victory.
- To share tools for building grit, including tips from personal experience and advice from professional experts.
- To inspire and galvanize future #GrittyGirls so that they too can achieve personal success.
